Enfield Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy
Enfield Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet and upholstery cleaning activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks, complying with relevant legislation and continually improving our standards.
Policy Aims and Scope
This policy applies to all staff, contractors and temporary workers engaged by Enfield Carpet Cleaners, whether working on client premises, in vehicles, at storage locations or in any associated work environment. Our aims are to prevent accidents and work-related ill health, protect property and minimise disruption to our clients and the communities we serve.
Health and safety considerations form an integral part of planning and delivering our cleaning services, including carpet cleaning, rug cleaning, upholstery cleaning and related activities. We will provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision so that all personnel can work safely and responsibly.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Enfield Carpet Cleaners has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that adequate resources are provided for health and safety. Management will:
Identify significant hazards associated with our cleaning operations and put in place effective control measures.
Carry out and regularly review risk assessments for tasks such as the use of cleaning chemicals, operation of machinery and work in client premises.
Ensure that safe systems of work are documented, communicated and followed by all staff.
Provide appropriate personal protective equipment and maintain it in a safe and serviceable condition.
Monitor performance, investigate incidents and take corrective action where improvements are needed.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and workers have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They are required to:
Follow all safety procedures, training and instructions provided by Enfield Carpet Cleaners.
Use chemicals, machinery, tools and personal protective equipment correctly and for their intended purpose.
Report hazards, defects, near misses, accidents and incidents to their supervisor as soon as reasonably practicable.
Cooperate with management on health and safety matters, including attending training and participating in risk assessments where requested.
Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or engaging in horseplay or unsafe behaviour on any work site.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Enfield Carpet Cleaners carries out risk assessments covering key aspects of our work, including manual handling, slips and trips, electrical safety, lone working and use of cleaning agents and equipment. These assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to working practices, equipment or locations.
Safe working procedures are implemented to reduce risk, such as using warning signs in wet areas, securing hoses and cables to prevent trip hazards, and planning vehicle access to minimise risk to pedestrians and property. Staff are briefed on any specific site risks before commencing work on client premises.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Many of our services require the use of specialist cleaning solutions, stain removers and treatment products. Enfield Carpet Cleaners manages these substances in accordance with recognised good practice. We obtain and retain safety data sheets and carry out appropriate assessments for products used.
Only trained staff are authorised to handle, dilute or apply cleaning chemicals. All substances are stored securely and transported safely in clearly labelled containers. Staff are instructed never to mix chemicals unless specifically trained and required to do so, and to ensure adequate ventilation when working indoors.
Equipment, Machinery and Electrical Safety
Our carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, steam equipment and other tools are maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Defective or damaged equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported for repair or replacement.
Electrical leads and plugs are checked for visible damage, and staff are trained to avoid overloading sockets or using equipment in unsafe locations. Water and electricity risks are carefully managed, particularly when using extraction machines and other powered equipment on damp or wet surfaces.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying and moving equipment, furniture and materials. Enfield Carpet Cleaners provides manual handling training so staff understand how to lift safely, use proper posture and avoid unnecessary strain. Where possible, equipment is transported on wheels or by team lifting to reduce the risk of injury.
Staff are encouraged to plan their work to minimise repetitive movements and awkward postures, and to take breaks at suitable intervals during longer jobs.
Site Safety, Access and Housekeeping
When working on client premises, our operatives will take all reasonable steps to maintain a safe environment for occupants and visitors. This includes placing warning signs, keeping work areas tidy, managing trailing hoses and cables, and ensuring that entrances, exits and escape routes are not obstructed.
Our teams respect client property, take care not to create unnecessary noise or disturbance and secure equipment when not in use.
Training, Information and Supervision
Enfield Carpet Cleaners provides induction and ongoing training relevant to each person’s role. Topics include general health and safety awareness, chemical handling, equipment operation, manual handling, first aid arrangements and emergency procedures.
Supervisors monitor working practices and provide additional guidance where necessary. Refresher training is delivered when new equipment or methods are introduced or where risk assessments identify a need.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and hazardous situations must be reported promptly to enable investigation and, where necessary, changes to procedures or further training. We maintain records of incidents and use them to improve our safety performance.
Staff are briefed on emergency procedures for fire, medical emergencies and building evacuations, and follow any specific instructions provided by clients for their premises.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
Enfield Carpet Cleaners is committed to regularly reviewing and updating this Health and Safety policy to reflect changes in legislation, industry guidance, working practices and the results of our monitoring activities. Feedback from staff and clients is encouraged and used to support continuous improvement in our health and safety performance.
By following this policy and working cooperatively, we aim to provide professional carpet cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved in or affected by our work.
